The Battle Of Agincourt

Charge! We ran at the enemy guts went flying pants were wet and all respect for the enemy was washed away in a bath of blood…. On the sixteenth of October we re-enacted the battle of Agincourt. First we made armour which we decorated with cross’s and dragons. We also made shields but I had already made my own along with a helmet which me and my mum designed. And then we made swords and got ready for Battle.

First we practised our formation. Then we started walking first taking. Then we started walking first taking a few steps at a time while the enemy fired on us with water bombs and flour bombs then we decided that was enough we charged! We charged again and again until finally it was over. We shook hands and left the battle with nothing but beating hearts and wet pants.

Eels Come To School

Victory students got slime on their hands last Thursday when eel expert Grant came in to room 11 to talk about eels.

He told room 11 lots of facts about long finned eels, including the fact that they are cannibalistic, and he even brought in some real eels. Eels can also breathe on land.

Grant took one out and anaesthetised it with clove oil so everyone could get a good look at an eel. When eels are scared they produce a slime-like fluid so when you try to hold them they slip out of your hands. They also have many sharp teeth which give them a good strong bite. Grant came in because room 11's topic for sustainability was eels.

Speeches

''Next speech,'' says Whaea Rachael. Two weeks ago the seniors at Victory had a speech competition. Everyone made a speech. Some people got to choose their topic and some didn't because their teachers selected theirs.

Everyone read the speeches they wrote to their teachers and then the teachers chose the best two or three people. The people that were chosen by their teacher had to compete in a whole syndicate competition. In that competition the judges(Gareth and Mrs Taylor) chose two winners, two runner ups and two third places.

The winners were Ngawai and Cumorah Lee, the runner ups were Lia and Jamie and the people that came third were Daniel and Bawi Min. There were lots of finalists who didn't get a placing.

Videos of for of the speeches are posted here.

Speech Compeitition

Here is a day that we all tried out for but sadly did not make it in. But some people did and that is for the speech competitions at Victory Primary School. Only two tamariki from each class were selected to speak in the competition. And they were Cumorah-lee, Ngawai Tia and Jamiee and Lea.

Cumorh-lee came first with Ngawai tia and Jamiee second with Lea. It was a massive night for the four of them. And I think it was also awesome too!

Badminton day

Shuttlecocks and rackets were busy on Sunday afternoon because the badminton tournament was on at the Victory School hall.

There were lots of games and everyone played about four games until the finals.

Maximus and William won.

There was a nice tea also.

Shark Mask

Victory kids are preparing for the masked parade by making shark masks. They have to make shark masks because of a Maori legend about a shark. Some creative kids are excited about making the masks for the parade.

It will be great fun at the masked parade. People will be singing, people will be cheering, some will be dancing and playing. The masks are going to look awesome there.

There was a disco at Victory School last Friday and the theme was - Hair-raiser! Students were wearing wigs and someone had glow sticks in their hair.

There was a hair salon where you could get your hair coloured for 50 cents.

Mini but Big

Its here, the moment we've been waiting for... Mini Olympic Day!

Let the games begin at Victory Primary School.

Yes the Mini Olympics day has come and gone at Victory Primary School. If you ask me it was "Awesome." It was better than the real Olympics - well not really, the real Olympic games have more sports than us. I love the Olympic Games! Good job New Zealand for winning golds.

The new Whare at Victory School

There is a new whare in our school near the bike shed.

In the whare there are koru pattens on the mat and some on the ceiling too.

Beside the front on the right side there is a painting of a tuatara with six babys and at the top there are the Seven Sisters watching them. Beside the next painting there are lots of little eggs with koru patterns.

The whare is for seniors like Rooms 11, 12, 13, 14, 8 and Room15 too. The seniors use it for meetings and other stuff and some children get to share their news too.

Rep Hockey

They are all filing onto the pitch. "Sticks down," their coach yells. Brrrrrr goes the whistle. The game starts West Coast takes the ball down the pitch. Nelson runs back to defend. It's like this for most the half and it's still nil all. Nelson were passing the ball down the pitch. Inner and center forward pass the ball down the pitch. The inner back sticks it at the goal and it's a good save from the goalie. Its still nil all at the end of the game.

Class Birds

They are cute, they are cuddly, and they love scratches. In Whaea Lynda's class, Room 11, there are two birds. Their breed is Cockatiel. They are absolutely love company.

If you put your fingers in the cage they won't like it and they will bite you. The two birds are called Manu and Olive (girl). Manu and Olive eat bird seed their favourite food is sunflower seeds. So if you see them one day peeping out their hearts, say hello.

New books in the Library

There are six new books in the library. They are called Gardening for Planet Earth, Mermaid Rock, Dog Biscuit, The Bear`s Water Picnic and The Bear`s Winter House and Princess Pigsty.

Dog Biscuit is about a girl named Bridget who ate a dog biscuit so she turned into a dog! There also is a recipe in the back for human being biscuits.

Gardening For Planet Earth is about organic gardens, how plants sustain life on Earth and the role insects play. The book also tells you about the fun and excitement of growing your own fruit and how organic gardening can slow climate change.

The Bears Water Picnic is about  a bear has organized a picnic on the river for his friends. Everything is going swimmingly until they are disturbed by a loud croaking noise from among the lily pads. It`s the frogs! They want to join in, but the friends don`t fancy putting up with he noise, so they move on.

Cyber Internet Safety

Do you worry about your kids safety on the computers?

Simulate-2-Educate has answered your questions. They are helping to provide your kids with information they need to be safe on the internet. Only the seniors get to learn about cyber-safety.

"I love having John teaching us how to use the internet right,'' said Zontay.

Parents can help their child/children by answering the sheet of questions they take home. By doing that it will test if you know about cyber-safety too.

Signs of Springs.

There are lots of signs of spring all around Victory Primary School like the big magnolia tree outside the library. It is blossoming. They are big white flowers.

Other flowers are blossoming too and plants are growing better now. The days are getting longer and the nights are getting shorter.

Mr Science

Room 14 is having Mr Science. They are working on shapes and structure. Who knows what structure means? It means building. You can make heaps of things with Mr Science and you can also build things. Every Monday we have Mr Science. "He's fun exciting and brainy," said Shavarna Scott Wilson.

What have tamariki been learning?

Tamariki have been learning about cyber safety, the Olympics, speeches and we have been competing in sports!
We also have been learning science. In science we got taught how to make elephant tooth paste and bouncy balls. We also got to make volcanoes.

But what is so sad is leaving this school next year because I have been here for four years and I have loved it.

Here are some tamariki who have done their mahi. Carlina, Harmoni  and Ngawai. They all have been learning all of these things and they are proud of it.

The Plight of the Wooden Eels

Lately Room 11 have been studying long finned eels so their teacher, Mrs Duncan, went down to the beach and got some sticks. The next day the students each selected a stick to paint and then set to work. Soon students were prancing around the classroom clutching brightly coloured eels with sequins for eyes and foam tails.

When all the eels were finished they were transferred to the library where Matua Vern hung them up on the wall so everyone can come from far and wide to see the great wooden eels.

Library

One of the most exciting places in Victory School is the library. It is a quiet place to read but children make noises. All classes come to the library once a week. We all are allowed to come at lunch time. Lots of people like to come here because they like to read, play and go on the computer. In the library we have a fish tank with little salmon.

Whaea Louise is the librarian. She said, "My job is to help people find books to read or information that they are searching for."

Teddy bears madness

Shymes with her teddy bear
Teddy bears, teddy bears here, there and everywhere. If you walk into Room 4 in the junior syndicate you will be bombarded with white teddy bears that haven't been dyed yet. They are made from white fabric sewed together and stuffed. Today they are dyeing them.

Every year the juniors make teddy bears. They dye them any colour they want. They are bright and vibrant.

Planting

"Done," say the students. This week the seniors students at Victory Primary School have been planting at Emano reserve and Murphy Street reserve. The students said done because they had finished planting. The people who helped were Gavin and Ruth. The students planted three or more plants each. There were three different kinds of native plants. Some students enjoyed it but some didn't. They didn't enjoy it because it was a lot of walking.

Netball hoops,defence and more

Fun exciting things happened on Saturday. Victory is actually what it means, they were victorious. I think you can guess why they were victorious, because they won. They played  Mapua. The score was 10-5.

"The defense was great I really enjoyed playing but .I can't take all the credit."said Ngawai.

The coach was Roimata. Otolose said that whaea Roimata always pushed her to the limit. She made training really hard and that's why they play amazingly well now.

Akotahi

Akotahi is the new class at Victory School. They say they like this classroom.  They have their own heat pump and it makes their lips dry. The tiger turf is only for the juniors.

Vision Quest

Victory Primary School  have an environmental group called Tiaki Taiao. Lately they have been working on a vision quest to help the school to become a better place. They have been doing this by creating a map of our school and getting kids to stick adjectives like sunny, muddy, fun and hazardous on it.

Tiaki Taiao have been getting teachers to pick five to ten students to stick an adjective that describes that particular place on the map.

Once nearly everyone has had their say on the map Tiaki Taiao will collect all the ideas up and try to improve the school with the students' ideas.

Mr Brown leaves for Wellington

Mr Brown is leaving Victory Primary School until the start of 2013.

Mr Brown is going to Wellington to be Chief Advisor to Schools and Community for the Ministry of Education, which means he will give advise to the Government, visit different places, talk to lots of different people and get people to understand the things that make schools run better.

He is looking forward to it but "it might stretch my brain a bit," he said.

Mr Brown is going to live in an apartment three stories up and only 100 metres from the Beehive.  He will be returning to Nelson in the weekends.

While he is in Wellington he hopes to see Te Papa, go to lectures at Victoria University, explore the city (eating places!) and visit places outside of Wellington.

Mr Brown said he will miss Victory Primary School and the fun things that happen here. While he is away he will  keep in contact by sending postcards, e-mails and Skyping, which he is just learning to use.

For the the rest of 2012 Mrs Taylor will be acting as Principal  and Mr Sullivan deputy Principal.

Victory's Hangi

Last Thursday Victory Primary School prepared the hangi ready for Friday. Victory was celebrating
Maori language week.

Room 8, Room 14, and Room 13 made the stuffing. They made it out of bread, herbs, onions, butter and salt. While they were making it, they watched a movie as well. Then the next day at 12:15 they headed over to the hangi pit to watch them take it out. When they took the hangi out the whanau classes said a karakia and sang some songs until it was our turn to get some kai. Everyone liked it. And it was a great week.

NZ Gold came to Victory

Sarah Ulmer came to Victory Primary School to talk about her time at the Olympics and winning gold for New Zealand last Wednesday. Plus she gave out prizes to kids who answered question correctly or asked good question

After talking about everything some kids were chosen to go on the Olympic bus and have a go on either the rowing machine or the bike. On the top deck was an iPad on which you could send a photo and a message to the Olympic team and the prizes were bottles, caps and beanies.

THAT WAS OUR FUN DAY WITH SARAH ULMER

Action, games and more....

Victory hit the jackpot because it had Nelson Girls teaching them sports skills.

They are only here this week. "We are focusing on netball and basketball," said Sophie, one of the Nelson Girls

The sun started to shine when they got here. People were smiling and enjoying themselves.
