Room 11 Fair Go entry on YouTube

This year for the Fair Go ad awards we had to find something from the 1970s and make it cool again. Room 11 chose handmade pottery and went to the Nelson Community Potters studio to film their ad.

Room 11 makes the Fair Go Ad Award finals!

Room 11 has made it to the finals of the 2017 Fair Go Ad Awards. This year students had to make an ad about something from the 1970s and make it cool again. We thought we’d make handmade pottery cool again. Miro, Shanika and Lucy went to Nelson Community Potters to film the ad. They learnt how to make a pot on the potter’s wheel. Miro was the videographer and Matua Craig filmed some extra shots on his phone. We had to make each shot really short to fit it into 30 seconds.



The Fair Go Ad awards with screen on TV1 at 7:30 on 27 November. Good luck Room 11.

Percussion Group video

The Victory Primary School percussion group went on a kindergarten walking tour recently.

Room 11 at Garden To Table

For two weeks Room 11 were doing Garden to Table. We did it on Wednesday and Thursdays. On Wednesdays we would do some gardening and on Thursdays we would do some cooking.

The first Thursday we did cooking we made some delicious potato wedges.


The different kind of wedges we made were: Spicy wedges, Garlic and Parmesan, Indian Spices and Herbed wedges.



"Cooking the wedges was my favourite part. My favourite flavour was Spicy wedges," Bailey-Jean said.

"Making food and eating it. My favourite was eating the potato wedges," said Megan. "But my favourite was making the spring rolls out of the rice paper but not eating them"

Fair Go Finalists

Our entry made the top ten ads in the Fair Go Ad Awards. Congratulations to everyone who help us make our ad, especially the animal owners!

Gavin Bishop visits Victory

Last Friday Gavin Bishop came to our school. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. He read us some of Piano Rock which is a book about his life from 3 to 9. Lily recommends this book. It is very interesting in so many ways.



He also showed us his teddy bear which is about 50 years old. Wow! He also made a book about the teddy bears life. He had a great sense of humour and seemed like a very friendly person. He read us another fantastic book called Bruiser.

Gavin Bishop has written so many other great books too.

New fence around our school

There are new fences around Victory Primary School to keep the children safe. The fences are made out of metal and they go around the whole school. The fence is two metres high. All schools in New Zealand have to have a fence now!



Matua Dylan thinks it's making the school bigger, tidier and newer. Sarah thinks it makes the school a safer place for some students because they can't climb over the fence.

The Mask Parade

In Room 11 Ms Duncan our teacher helped us to choose a book for the Mask Parade. People had to choose one character from that book and choose a mould that would best suit that character and that you could make into that character.



The first thing we needed to do was make some paper mache. To make the paper mache we had to rip up a lot of newspaper and put it into a giant plastic container. Then we put it into a container with some warm water and some glue. Next we had to mix it all up with our hands and it got really messy and sticky. We let it sit overnight and the next day we got to make the masks.

Victory Fair Go ad makes top 10

This year for the Fair Go Ad award we had to make an ad with an animal in it. We thought we would put our love of animals and our love of reading together to make our ad.




Rosa brought her guinea pigs to school and we used Spike in our ad. Sarah, Luke’s sister, read to Spike. Maya is one of the dogs from Paw Prints. Piper read to Maya. Van tha bawi read to Xavier, Whaea Lynda’s turtle, and Dawt Ku read to Manu the cockatiel.

We filmed our ad in the school library and in Room 16. Matua Craig helped us make our ad.

Megan was an animal wrangler, gopher, and cameraperson. Gryphon was the guinea pig pooper-scooper, a wrangler and gopher. Luke was an animal wrangler and gopher. Ethan H was our fake dog and a animal wrangler and Rosa was the guinea pig wrangler.

The finals of the Fair Go schools' ad awards will be on TV1 at 7:30 on Wednesday, 4 November.

Cultural Diversity Day

Next week on 10 September it is a very special day for Victory Primary School because all the cultures at our school from around the world are sharing their customs.



They will also be sharing these things:

- Costumes
- Foods
- Games

Some students from Victory will be Performing and other students will be talking about where they come from and what culture are they celebrate.

There will be kids that are helping their parents cooking and sharing their items.

Rock Da House

Rock the house is a show that lots of schools are doing. There are four nights and each school does one night with other schools but there is a special choir called The Back Beat Choir which do two nights and also do the harmonies.



Two students from Victory Primary School are in The Back Beat Choir. They performed at Nelson College on Wednesday and Thursday night. Victory Primary School is performed on Thursday 3 September. They sang a variety of songs. There are the songs they sang.

Taiaha wānanga

During Mãori Language week a group students from Victory Primary School went to Whakatū Marae for a taiaha wãnanga.



Only boys went to the wãnanga. They learnt mau rakau and taiaha. They also stayed the night at the marae.

Matua Solomon taught them mau rakau and games and told them stories. "It was so cool," said Morpheus.

"We got to play games and learn at the same time and we got told stories of our Atua." said Wiremu.

"I liked the story where Tūmatauenga stood up to Tawhirimatea," said Addison.

"The game that I liked was heke heke," said Oho.

Tereme liked walking in Miyazu and seeing the shooting star. "We got up at 5:30 and went to Miyazu."

Whaea Lynda Illuminates

Room 11 teacher Lynda Duncan has been working hard in her spare time to make an illuminated window at Woodlea Floral Studio on Bridge Street as part of Feast for the Senses.



Ms Duncan makes sea creature sculptures out of old milk bottles. She cuts out shapes and rivets them together and then lights them up.



"I just want people to enjoy the window, To have a smile," she said. "If it cheers them up in the middle of winter I'm happy."

Video gets 100s of views on YouTube

The Song for Everyone video has been viewed on YouTube over six hundred times in less than a week.

India and a team of senior students made this video to celebrate diversity at Victory Primary School.

Matariki

Victory Primary School celebrated Matariki this week. It is a time when we remember the people who have passed on.



Some kids put on a play for everyone in the hall. Then we had soup at the Victory Community Centre.



Everyone walked up the Railway Reserve. We carried our lanterns up to the top. There and back to the Community Centre is about 3km. It was cold and dark on the way back.



Back at the Community Centre there were lots of dance items from different cultures.

Victory Scratch Club

It was finally complete. Andrew, Darcy, Victor, and Ethan P from The Victory Code Club were working on a project for a ping pong app using coding but this coding is different. You have probably heard about JavaScript coding but this is Scratch coding and it looks like this.



Scratch is an online coding site were you can code, use other peoples creations, and have a secret look inside them. The way you code on Scratch is that you create your own characters then snap blocks together to make the coding.

Flooding at Victory

Playtime turned into splash time at Victory Primary School on Wednesday when some of the school flooded.





The back court was closed for morning tea because the gutters were blocked and the water had gone everywhere. Nobody could play soccer until lunchtime. Most of the water has gone now but it was good fun while it lasted. By Darcy

iPad app review: ScratchJr

ScratchJr is a great app for making animations with block coding.



It's great for all ages even though it's called jr. The app is really easy to use and play. You can make something cool or completely random.

Coding is the new literacy! With ScratchJr, young children (ages 5-7) can program their own interactive stories and games. In the process, they learn to solve problems, design projects, and express themselves creatively on the computer.

I used it and made a quick animation in one minute.  ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
